For the first time, I went into the back cloister of San Lorenzo - here they keep the remnants of the Allied bomb that landed on the basilica during WWII, nearly destroying it and causing Pope Pius XII to make a late-night drive out to the basilica to comfort his people and provide what he could to help feed the newly homeless. It is tragic of course, but also a poignant witness to the care and concern of the pope whose reputation has been much maligned in recent years.
