The Roamin' Roman

Benvenuto! You have happened upon the blog of a wandering Catholic American college student studying for a year in Rome, the Eternal City. You will find here my pontifications, ruminations, reflections, images, and ponderings on my life in Rome. Ciao!

View looking down into the well from the top levels - yeah, it's deep! It basically was a way for the residents on top of the cliff to get water without having to go down the hill... According to the guidebook, the main chamber and stairwell was built "from the bottom up", dug out of the tufa rock (not sure exactly how they did this... hmm.) There are actually two sets of stairways, forming a "double helix", a complete circut - they would lead a donkey down to get water, across that little bridge you see on the bottom, and then bring him back up through the other side's stairway. Both stairways circle around each other - very fascinating!
