The Roamin' Roman

Benvenuto! You have happened upon the blog of a wandering Catholic American college student studying for a year in Rome, the Eternal City. You will find here my pontifications, ruminations, reflections, images, and ponderings on my life in Rome. Ciao!

Monday, November 7

A tomb inside St. Prassade's of an unknown pilgrim, pilgrims used to pass through St. Prassade's on their way to St. Mary Major a little ways away, and since "pilgrimage" meant something a bit different back then (since it took a lot longer and a lot more effort to accomplish the journey, and many pilgrims were actually sent on pilgrimage by their priests as penance) there were actually a lot of pilgrims who died on the journey. Apparently this fellow had requested burial in this church should he die before reaching St. Mary Major. So now here he lies, in a quiet corner of the church. In this month of November, the month in which we remember the dead, we pray that he and all the pilgrim souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, may rest in peace.
