I think St. Matthew is actually the young man at the end of the table, counting his coins, with his head down.
But he'll see the light soon enough!

That's what I thought at first too, but the description at the church says that Matthew is the one who is the large figure in the middle, looking up startled and pointing at himself - the others at the end of the table still counting money are symbolic of the who are oblivious to the coming of Christ. Further interpretative details of the painting can be found at the WGA, and that online description seemed to match what was on display at the church (but who knows?).
