Santa Pudenziana and her sister Santa Praxedes were reputed to have aided in the gathering of the bodies of the martyrs, hiding them in this well until they could be buried. It's said that the blood of 3000 martyrs went into this well (not sure where that number came from, but it's a good devotional image to remember)
